Power Wheelchairs

Can You Say Yes to these Questions?

Have you applied for a Disability Living Allowance towards your mobility needs, if you want to?

Have you talked to family, friends or a therapist about buying a chair?
Get as much information as you can.

Are you aware there are Class 2 and 3 power wheelchairs?

Have you tried more than one power wheelchair around your home and neighbourhood to compare them. Check kerbs, doorways, tight corners and rough ground if necessary.

Have you thought about where you will store the chair when not in use, and have you ramps if necessary at your front and back door? Check with Social Services to see if they can help before you buy your power wheelchair.

If you intend transporting your chair in a car, have you checked that you or your carer can physically manage this? Even in parts, power wheelchairs are heavy?

Will the chair still suit you in a few years time?

Have you thought about maintenance? The chair will need charging, cleaning and repair. The tyres may need pumping up. Is the repair service local?

When you try a selection of chairs, check the seating. Do you look good and feel secure and stable. A good chair should support your arms, back, thighs and trunk but allow a little space for outdoor clothing if necessary.

Can you control the chair well? Try different controls if necessary and practice for at least an hour. Controls can be very sensitive until you get used to them.

Can you confidently transfer in and out of the chair in the manner you are happy with?
